Finish the Job
"...And We Will Finish the Job"
This powerful original caricature depicts Allied soldiers between the years 1939 and 1942 dismantling a large swastika. Both France and Britain declared war against Germany in 1939. Their counteroffensives were subsequently joined by Russia in 1941-42 and The United States in 1942. Szyk consciously deploys his command of the obvious with his mastery of symbolism The powerful, evil icon of the Nazi swastika here metamorphoses in four simple strokes into the still more powerful symbol of peace and civilization - the Christian cross. Though Szyk certainly saw Hitler first through the eyes of a Jew, he had a broad enough world understanding to realize the more widely accepted symbology of the cross. "And we will finish the job till it becomes a cross again" boldly states what the last soldier, the American, has resolved to do.
