History of Hasan

The History of Khwajah Hasan Al-Habbal [published in Arabian Nights Entertainments].
This illumination shows Hasan, the poor but honest rope-maker, dressed in ragged garments. He is seen running along a path, clutching a leather pouch and chasing a vulture that is flying away with his turban above him. This miniature gouache drawing was published in The Arabian Nights Entertainments, translated by Sir Richard Burton with 60 illustrations by Arthur Szyk, The Limited Editions Club, Ipswich, 1954, 4 volumes, facing page 654; and in a 2 volume reprint with only 40 illustrations by The Heritage Press, New York, 1955, facing page 659.
