Samuel

Samuel, one of the earliest historical prophets of Ancient Israel, responding to the people's call to appoint a King of Israel, anoints Saul the first King of the Israelites. A new chapter in the history of the Jewish people is about to be opened and perhaps that is why Szyk painted this image as a book about to be opened with the viewer able to look within its pages for a glimpse of the biblical event. The Hebrew text at the top are words from Samuel to Saul (I Samuel 10:1): "Is it not that the Lord hath anointed thee to be prince over His inheritance?" With the vial of oil in hand Samuel consecrates the new king to Divine service.
