Issued in sheets of 20 (4 x 5 rows) on unwatermarked paper. The images on each perforated sheet measure approx. 6" x 7". Mint Condition.

In 1816, the American Colonization Society was chartered by the United States Congress to repatriate emancipated slaves in their original African homeland. The country of Liberia was officially founded in 1824, four years after the arrival of the first colonists from America.

There are no errors or varieties of this issue listed in the major stamp catalogues.


One Cent Stamp: Full sheet. Natives Approaching Village shows natives of mixed tribal stock with typical conical thatched roof huts in the background. The Seal of the Liberian Republic appears in the center foreground with its motto in ribbon, "The love of liberty brought us here."

Liberian One Cent Stamp

Liberian Two Cent Stamp Two Cent Stamp: Full sheet. Rubber Tapping and Planting portrays natives bearing buckets of latex passing a tapping rubber tree with natives planting rubber trees in the background. The Firestone Tire & Rubber Company investigated rubber culture in Liberia in 1923 and in 1926 received a 99 year concession lease of one million acres. Rubber is Liberia's principal crop.

Three Cent Stamp: Full sheet. Landing of First Colonists. The landing of the first emigrants from the "Nautilus", is shown in the background. These settlers had joined with 88 who had sailed in February 1820 on the frigate "Elizabeth". Both groups in January 1822 settled on Providence Island in the mouth of the Mesurado River. Soon after arrival at Cape Mesurado, this handful was joined by other who came on the USS "Alligator".
